My running mileage has been very low this past week or so. Only 54 miles of running in the past 7 days. That's not to say that I haven't been training much. I did take last Wednesday off because I had to work early and then I just didn't have much ambition in the evening. Other than that though my mileage is only down because I have been doing a lot of cross training. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, weight lifting, and a little bit of biking. On top of this much of the running that I have done has been in snow with a good amount of climbing, and most of the hiking and snowshoeing has been only because I was trudging through too much snow to run.
Tonight though I was starting to feel like I just hadn't really turned my legs over enough in the past several days so I went to the gym to get in a little tempo work on the treadmill (and lift some weights). I ran fast for the first time this month and it felt really good.
I'm not sure how much all this cross training will help for the HURT 100 which is now less than 3 weeks away, but ultimately I'm training more for the Iditarod Invitational right now and certainly all this trudging through deep snow on ski, foot, and snowshoe will help immensely in my preparation for that race.
It seems like in the last month I have become a hiker because the snow is just to deep to run in. I love getting on the treadmill and cranking it just to stretch the legs out a little bit. Then I head out and do the "Alaska Deep Snow Shuffle" for a couple of hours.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of work accounts down in Juneau and I was talking with one of them on the phone yesterday about the HURT. He told me there is a crazy guy down there in his early 30s that is always out running. He said that this guy wasnt your average jogger because he is always flying down the road in all types of weather and he asked if I knew who he was. I told him I had a feeling that I knew who he was talking about.=)
I'm inspired by the way you run. I've never been an endurance athlete, however I love reading about your training and races. Its great, keep doing it!
