Accurate Post title, except for the "I guess" part. I agree with Evan. Obviously, it's a compliment.

sorry mom,

Geoff, PLB devices or SAT phones are allowed. You should wait for this one to come out in a month or two:

ACR ResQLink PLB

It's going to be reasonably priced and pretty small. It works on the same frequencies as marine and aviation beacons and has coverage worldwide and is legal in the US. Compared to that, the SPOT is merely a toy (my SPOT was just recalled because guess what - it doesn't work reliably below 40F).

However, this is NOT a tracking device. You can send a few updates via the self-test function (ACR has a service that allows you to generate an e-mail notification from that) but it's not really useful for continuous tracking. However, such a device is much more reliable than a SPOT. It also generates a continuous homing signal, and it has much higher transmission power and works in a far wider range of conditions. It's designed to get you rescued.

I can understand why ITI doesn't allow SPOTs, since the notorious unreliability of those things can cause a lot of anxiety in anyone expecting them to work ...

See you in Alaska :)

I should qualify:

the PLB I mentioned is supposed to come out end of May. Of course there are a lot of other good PLBs out there.

The allowed PLBs are the ones operating on the 406 MHz COSPAS SARSAT system I believe. Always double-check w/ Bill of course.

Cheers,
Beat

Enjoy it man, now all I have to do is get you to Maine and NH and you'll be itching to run the AT! Seriously, a two man attempt at that record could be a good way to go about it.....hmmmmm, I just thought of that randomly. hmmmmmm.....

You need to talk to Dusty Olson and get the "glove". :-) Enjoy the tundra.
