In 'Em To Win 'Em

On Sunday evening I got together with a bunch of friends here in Juneau to celebrate my UROY award. It was a nice gathering of about 50 people. I honestly didn't even know that I knew 50 people in Juneau. I felt a bit awkward to be the subject of such a large gathering, but it was fun to see so many of my friends, from different circles of the local community, together in one place. The type of gathering that I may have been terribly uncomfortable at if I wasn't the bridge between everyone there, such that I knew everyone there.

The question that I was asked the most that evening was, "so what races and running plans do you have for this year"? My easy answer to this question for the past month has been that I just want to have more fun running in the mountains than ever before and to focus on races that I've never run before. Now though I've begun to move toward a few more specific racing plans for this year.

I've known for a couple months now that I would be running Western States, but I have now begun to fill in some of the gaps both before and after June 26th. The biggest news in regards to this is that I'm going to go to Europe in August and run the Mt. Blanc race! Just found out today that I got accepted in the lottery. These races will most certainly be my two "focus races" of the year. I am not going to settle for just showing up and running either one of these without my most focused effort. I will be running to win both of them. I know this may sound a bit bold being that these may be the two most competitive 100 mile races in the world, but I know that I have a chance to win any 100 mile race that I line up for. Doesn't mean that my chances are even all that great in either one of these, but knowing that I do have a chance is really all I need to make that my intention in these races. I'm sure other goals/intentions for both of these races will present themselves as the time draws closer to race day, but for now I'm in them to win them!

Check out my sidebar if you're interested in seeing which other races I'm eyeing for 2010.

Thanks for updating regularly. I always look forward to a new post, even if no running's going on.
I'm going out for a snowshoe run today.

With you coming to UTMB, and KIlian being there at WS, it will really be a good 2-set test of Europe vs US :-)
Looking forward to this.

Congrats on a great year!

I'll pick up the pieces, hopefully behind the big showdown. Western will be the real showdown with Killian. The key now is to put as much pressure on him as possible. Make him sweat. What's cool is I don't have any pressure. I'm a brides maid! :-)

Good luck in 2010!

Those Europeans are great runners so I expect you and Karl will not have it all your own way. Mind you I believe you two represnt the best chance of a US victory at Mt Blanc for years.

You and Karl will give a good run at Mt Blanc, that will be a race to see! Shure you will have a good year. Best of luck!

I've been both a competitor and a fan of UTMB and big mountain ultras and am psyched you're entered. The race goes from gaudy crowds, to isolation, to the surreal sometimes. I think Krissy M showed last year that WS and UTMB are well spaced and you'll do great.

Congratulations again!!! It is pretty impressive to walk into Barnes & Noble and there on the magazine rack is a magazine with your son's picture on the front cover - Geoff, I just stood there in disbelief and then bought 3 copies so I could share it with everyone who I come in contact with. One copy is at Sheri's and one is at Shawn's (they are just as impressed as Dad & I are). I will get them back after they brag a little about their brother and then I have to send a copy to Brian & Vicki (their children want to take it to school to show their friends) What more can we say - you are just an awesome son!! Of course all your siblings are just as awesome in their own way. We must have done something right along the way.

We love you all so very much.

Technology truly is an inescapable aspect of our daily lives, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes less expensive, the possibility of transferring our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about all the time.

Congrats on getting into UROY. One thing is for certain. Regardless of who shows up, you will no doubt be right there with them. Not like you are stepping on the trail for first time. People know who you are. Killian knows who you are by now. Train well, race smart to get to the starting line of each race. -cr

A friend of mine mentioned 2012 last night to me and it's the first I heard about it so I jumped on here out of curiosity. I think it's kind of sick and sounds like a bunch of skeptical jargon.
I choose to live every day like it is the last because let's be real, WHO THE HELL KNOWS what is going to happen or when it's your time to go on. The past is history, the future is a mystery and now is a gift, thats why it's called the present. It's not healthy to sit around and trip out about when you will die. Stop wasting your time you have now.
